You’re now looking at one of the world’s most important health and mental health frameworks. The 5 Element Theory has been essential in China for the past 2,500 years. These five elements organize the patterns we can find in nature and apply them to our understanding of philosophy, psychology, science, art, martial arts, agriculture, architecture, emotions, colors, sounds, textures, nature and the human body…

I was introduced to the 5 Element Theory more than 30 years ago. I grew up in a Western medicine-focused home. Then, I went for my first acupuncture treatment. That’s when I learned how the five elements are used in assessing and treating medical issues. From there, the elements have continued to teach me about my nature, personality, food preferences and how to understand myself in new ways.

As you can see from the chart, the five basic energetic elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

  • Each element has its own, specific set of characteristics related to emotions, colors, parts of the body, organs, seasons, directions, tastes and more.
  • The elements interact with each other in infinite forms of conflict and collaboration. For example, getting and staying healthy depends on the elements working in harmony.
  • There’s even a way to associate the five elements to different personality types. In other words: The five elements can impact your relationships and your love life!

In the days ahead, I’ll talk a lot about the 5 Element Theory. For now, I’m here to share my version of the basic 5 Element chart. It’s something to think and dream about.
