Post image for 3 ways I’m learning to be a smart traveller

PARIS, France — Ugh, I was just pickpocketed! Want to hear even more distressing information? On the Air France flight from New York to Paris, I managed to lose my iPhone, driver’s license, American Express card and my socks. I’ve decided to include all the bad news in one post because my daughter Gabi says [...]

Post image for How to eat in Paris for $38 a day

PARIS, FRANCE — It’s Day #2 of our vacation and we’re getting the hang of walking everywhere and using the Metro as our subway. Of course, we need the exercise because we are eating, eating, eating… We had a delightful first night snoring in the comfy beds of the two-bedroom, $327-a-night rental apartment that we [...]

Post image for Come with me to Paris!

At last, my daughter Gabi and I are at JFK,  waiting to board our 9:55 p.m. flight to Paris. The entire day was a mad blur of finishing stories for work, squashing everything into my carry-on luggage, straightening up the house and getting the animals ready for the pet sitter (needed to organize their food [...]

I’m already fantasizing about those 2011 vacations! To preserve cash, I’ll be on AirBnB.com again. This travel listings website offers a terrific option to booking hotels. Folks use it to post the availability of their spare bedrooms, houses, lofts and apartments. The guests can be impressive; the Obamas just stayed at an AirBnB listing in [...]

One of the problems I face in training young reporters is that every year, they get younger. That means 9/11 ends up feeling more and more remote to them. But then, I take these newbies on a field trip that transforms everything. If people think I do a decent job of preparing journalism students for [...]

My three-week trip to India included a 36-hour stopover in Mumbai. Formerly known as Bombay, it’s the world’s most populated city in the world’s second largest country. In 2008, it made headlines because its most super-luxury hotel was attacked by terrorists. So you know I had to stay at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower. [...]

Well hello again, finally! At last, I’m posting about India… Even though I fantasized about blogging during my journey through the second largest country on the planet, I had trouble finding Internet access. Then once I was home, a wicked case of jet lag kicked my butt. I’m not 100% yet. But if I don’t [...]

Our India vacation is only my second trip abroad IN NEARLY 20 YEARS. A pathetic fact, I know. But it gets worse… My lack of experience with the real world has created stoopid, last-minute problems that have, thankfully, taught me a lot.   Problem #1: I needed to obtain a visa to enter India. Of [...]

For a delightful — and somewhat disturbing — view of India’s relationship to nature, check out Hogenakkal Falls. This major tourist attraction is far more interesting than America’s Niagra Falls. It actually reminds me of an all-natural water amusement park filled with friendly monkeys, amazing boat rides, sweet little beaches and sadly, too much human [...]

CHENNAI, INDIA — For the next three weeks, my daughter and I will be traveling around southern Indian with New York friends who have gone “back home” to visit with family. As you can imagine, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to see this country through the eyes of people who really love it. [...]

Just got back from a week in L.A. Haven’t been there in years, not since I was a wife of an executive traveling on expense account. But I’m happy to report that this city can still be fun on a budget!

For July 4th, I hauled my daughter and one of her friends up to Woodstock, N.Y. This town is more country hip than true hippie. But it was fun — especially since it’s so hard to get my teenager to spend time with me these days.

As of this post, my redesigned blog is up and running on this new site! And here is my first post, about being on vacation now on Sanibel Island, Fl. It’s beautiful. Being here has reminded me that I’m still beautiful too.

I’ve got great work-out solutions. Do it online! Here are two great sites, one for yoga lessons, the other for salsa dance lessons. I swear by them both.
