Post image for New places to eat in Manhattan, with photos. Yum.

My new reporting job has me in the ‘burbs of  Westchester County 24-7. I miss Manhattan! So I’m making a point to get down there and explore the city through its food. Taking a bite of the Big Apple has been an education in just how much dining in New York has evolved. Here are [...]

Post image for Where to go for a fun night on Broadway — with photos

Want to know how crazy expensive New York City can get? I recently treated two teenagers to a fun, $462 night on the town. And it was glorious to get out of my budgeting head to just throw some money around. It made me feel like a cool mom (for a change). This was the [...]

Post image for Why I’m not cranky this Thanksgiving

Even though I can be grouchy around the holidays (’tis a hellish season to be single), you won’t hear any complaints from me right now. Instead, I am feeling reasonably sociable, for three reasons… ***First up, here is one of my favorite cartoons from The New Yorker. Last Thanksgiving, I posted this precious moment from [...]

Post image for My NYU “Food Writing” has the scoop on NYC food

Have I got a treat for you! My NYU “Food Writing” class is here with info about fun food things to do in New York City. They’re each sharing a few links to some of the delicious moments they’ve had while working on stories for our class.  These students spend a lot of time doing [...]

For the longest time, I’ve wanted to try Blue Hill. But I’d never been — even though it’s located barely 20 minutes from my house. This super-exclusive restaurant has been beyond my reach for many reasons. For starters, it’s a pain to make reservations a month in advance. For another, the meals are pricey. I [...]

Oh, my goodness. Wait ’til you see my photos from a new, food-obsessed mall in Flushing. When we were kids in Manhattan’s Chinatown, we dismissed this Queens-based Chinese community as a second-rate Chinatown. But Flushing is becoming Little China — which means that a recent adventure there stirred up intense, mixed feelings. The other night, [...]

My NYU journalism students and I are sitting right now in our last class for “Reporting Downtown.” Yay! We’re done with homework. Then again, boo – after bonding during the spring semester, our time together is almost over.   But we’ll go out in the world with some great memories. Everyone especially loved the [...]

A typical Chinese banquet can be an insanely delicious 10-course orgy. While I’ve attended a few fab vegetarian versions of this feast, most events are heavy on meat and seafood. Unfortunately, these menus also feature one item that symbolizes the brutality of Chinese food culture: shark fin soup. Chinese banquets go on 24/7 to celebrate [...]

This post is in the practical advice category. It contains info that I wish I’d had as a young Chinatown ghetto nerd who was trying to figure out mainstream dining. What did I know about bread plates and water glasses? As a kid, the family meal was simply a matter of sitting down with a [...]

My three-week trip to India included a 36-hour stopover in Mumbai. Formerly known as Bombay, it’s the world’s most populated city in the world’s second largest country. In 2008, it made headlines because its most super-luxury hotel was attacked by terrorists. So you know I had to stay at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower. [...]

Well hello again, finally! At last, I’m posting about India… Even though I fantasized about blogging during my journey through the second largest country on the planet, I had trouble finding Internet access. Then once I was home, a wicked case of jet lag kicked my butt. I’m not 100% yet. But if I don’t [...]

More on MoCA’s “Dumpling Night” — here’s the video from the event. Also, bios that I prepared on each of the panelists. Enjoy!

If you love Chinese dumplings, check out this post. I’ve got the names of places to eat and more. Lots of photos too, from Dumpling Night at the Museum of Chinese in America, where I was asked to moderate a panel. It was all a lot of fun.

Just got back from a week in L.A. Haven’t been there in years, not since I was a wife of an executive traveling on expense account. But I’m happy to report that this city can still be fun on a budget!

For July 4th, I hauled my daughter and one of her friends up to Woodstock, N.Y. This town is more country hip than true hippie. But it was fun — especially since it’s so hard to get my teenager to spend time with me these days.
